India’s smartphone market continues to grow, with the third quarter of 2024 seeing 46 million units shipped, according to the latest report from the International Data Corporation (IDC). This quarter’s mobile phone shipment report reveals that Vivo has claimed the top spot for smartphone sales in India, closely followed by another Chinese brand, Oppo. Samsung, however, has fallen behind, securing third place.

Vivo Emerges as India’s Leading Smartphone Brand

According to IDC, Vivo now holds the number one position in the Indian smartphone market with a 15.8% market share, driven by the popularity of its Y-series, T3, and V40 models. Oppo follows in second place with a market share of 13.9%, experiencing a 47.6% increase in sales compared to last year. Key models like the A3X, K12X, and Reno 12 series have contributed significantly to Oppo’s growth.

In contrast, Samsung’s sales have seen a sharp decline. The South Korean brand’s market share has dropped to 12.3%, with sales down by 19.7% compared to the same period last year. Realme has also seen a decrease in its market share, falling from 15.1% to 11.4%. Meanwhile, Xiaomi holds the fifth spot, with a market share of 11.4%, supported by a modest 2.7% growth compared to last year.

IDC also identified Poco as an independent brand, with a 5.8% market share, placing it in sixth position. Motorola, however, showed remarkable progress, with a 149.5% year-over-year increase in smartphone sales, raising its market share to 5.7%. In seventh and eighth places are iQOO and OnePlus, with iQOO recording a sales growth of 101.4%, while OnePlus saw a decline of 39.3%, with market shares of 4.2% and 3.6%, respectively.

Apple Leads in the Premium Smartphone Segment

IDC’s report also highlighted Apple’s dominance in the premium smartphone segment (₹50,000–₹68,000). Apple now holds an 8.6% market share in this category, selling around 4 million units in India during the third quarter—a 58.5% increase over last year. The report further notes that the demand for 5G smartphones in India has risen, with 5G devices in the ₹24,000 price range seeing significant sales growth.

Overall, this quarter has demonstrated shifts in India’s smartphone landscape, with Chinese brands leading the market and Apple holding strong in the premium segment.
