OTT Release Sparks Threats; Court Ensures Interim Protection

New Delhi, February 6 (H.S.) The Supreme Court of India has granted interim security to Discovery Channel officials following threats over the OTT release of the documentary ‘Cult of Fear Asaram Bapu’. The bench, headed by Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna, has directed the police to ensure the safety of Discovery Communications India’s officials and property amid rising concerns over their security.

🔹 Supreme Court’s Order on Security

The Supreme Court, while hearing a plea from Discovery Communications India, has:
✅ Issued a notice to the police, directing them to provide immediate protection to the company’s officials.
✅ Scheduled the next hearing for the week starting March 3, 2025.
✅ Emphasized that law enforcement must take swift action to prevent any potential harm to Discovery’s employees.

During the hearing, Discovery’s legal counsel highlighted that since the release of the documentary, employees have been receiving constant threats, making it unsafe for them to travel. Despite complaints, no concrete action has been taken by the police, forcing many employees to work from home due to security concerns.

🔹 Why is Discovery Facing Threats?

The controversial documentary ‘Cult of Fear Asaram Bapu’ sheds light on the criminal history and influence of self-styled godman Asaram Bapu, who is serving a life sentence for the rape of a minor. Following its OTT release, there has been a backlash from Asaram’s supporters, leading to:

  • Social media threats targeting Discovery officials.
  • Protests and demonstrations, including an incident on January 30 outside Discovery’s Mumbai office, where a large crowd gathered in protest.
  • Failure of law enforcement to take action against those issuing threats, despite clear security concerns.

The petition filed by Discovery Communications India has sought nationwide security measures for its officials and offices, fearing that these threats could escalate into direct attacks.

🔹 Legal Battle and Freedom of Expression

This case has also sparked a larger debate on press freedom and safety. The Supreme Court’s intervention underscores the growing concerns over the security of media professionals and content creators when dealing with controversial subjects.

Discovery Channel’s legal team has reiterated that the documentary is based on facts and investigative journalism, and threats against journalists and media houses set a dangerous precedent for free speech and independent reporting.

🔹 What’s Next?

  • Police are now mandated to provide security to Discovery officials and properties.
  • The Supreme Court will reassess the situation in early March to determine if further legal action is required.
  • Law enforcement agencies are under scrutiny for their inaction, and pressure is mounting for stricter measures against those making criminal threats.

This landmark case highlights the growing risks faced by investigative journalists and media platforms, raising questions about how India protects the right to report freely in the face of religious extremism and organized intimidation.
