Indian Railways is all set to take a significant step forward with the launch of the Vande Bharat Sleeper Train, an advanced version of India’s fastest-growing train fleet. This new high-speed sleeper train will redefine long-distance travel and enhance passenger experience. According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) release, the world-class high-speed sleeper train is now a reality.
Vande Bharat Sleeper Successfully Completes Trial Run
The first 16-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper Train successfully completed rigorous testing by the Research Designs and Standards Organization (RDSO) on January 15, 2025, covering 540 km on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad route. The Integral Coach Factory (ICF) in Chennai completed the manufacturing of India’s first Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Set on December 17, 2024.
Within two weeks, the train was transported to Kota Division, where it underwent short-distance test runs of 30-40 km for three consecutive days. The train achieved a top speed of 180 km/h, ensuring a smooth and comfortable ride. The Vande Bharat Sleeper trains are expected to redefine overnight train journeys for passengers in the coming months.
Nine More Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains by December 2025
According to the PIB release, the production of nine more Vande Bharat Sleeper Train Sets has been scheduled between April and December 2025. These trains will set new benchmarks in efficiency and comfort for long-distance travelers.
In preparation for the full-scale rollout, Indian Railways placed a major order on December 17, 2024, for 50 rakes of 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper trains. Two leading Indian manufacturers have been assigned the order, with a two-year timeline for completion.
- Medha Servo Drives Ltd. will supply propulsion systems for 33 rakes.
- Alstom India will provide propulsion systems for 17 rakes.
From 2026-27, the large-scale production of 24-coach Vande Bharat Sleeper Trains will begin, strengthening India’s self-reliance in railway technology.

Before its official operation, the Research Designs & Standards Organization (RDSO) will analyze the trial run results and issue a final certification. The Commissioner of Railway Safety (CRS) will evaluate the train’s maximum speed before approving its commercial launch.
