In recent times, many individuals have fallen victim to sextortion scams, resulting in significant financial and emotional distress. Incidents involving explicit videos and the harvesting of personal information under the guise of social media friendships are no longer uncommon. Unfortunately, many WhatsApp users remain unaware of these deceptive practices, which cybercriminals exploit for their gain. To combat this issue, WhatsApp is set to introduce a new feature aimed at enhancing user safety.

For active WhatsApp users, staying informed about upcoming changes is essential. Currently, when you make a video call on WhatsApp, the app automatically activates your phone’s front camera. This means that if your camera is not on, you cannot answer the call. However, there may be instances when you prefer to answer a call without having your camera activated.

Meta, the parent company of WhatsApp, is working on a solution to this problem. According to reports from Android Authority, users will soon see a new option labeled “Turn off your video” during video calls. By tapping this button, users can disable their camera, allowing them to answer the call in voice mode only. To access this feature, users will need to update their WhatsApp to the latest version available on the Google Play Store.

In addition to the new video-off option, WhatsApp will also introduce an “Accept without video” feature. This will enable users who wish to remain unseen during video calls to do so easily. While this feature may not appeal to everyone, it could be a game-changer for many users, providing them with greater control over their privacy during calls.

Overall, this new feature represents a significant step towards protecting users from sextortion and fraud. By allowing users to manage their video settings more effectively, WhatsApp is taking proactive measures to enhance the safety and security of its platform. As these features roll out, users can enjoy a more secure calling experience, ensuring they have the option to engage without compromising their privacy.
