Direct-to-Device Satellite Connectivity by BSNL
India’s state-run telecom provider, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), in collaboration with a California-based communication technology firm, has introduced a groundbreaking Satellite-to-Device service. The initiative aims to provide uninterrupted connectivity to users in remote areas of the country. The service, which underwent trials starting October, is expected to be rolled out nationwide soon.
What is BSNL Satellite-to-Device Service?
This innovative service is designed to establish communication networks in remote and isolated regions where traditional cellular and Wi-Fi networks may not reach. With this service, users in inaccessible areas can stay connected. BSNL claims the service will support emergency calls, SOS messaging, and even UPI payments in regions without cellular or Wi-Fi coverage. However, it is unclear whether the service will support regular calls and SMS beyond emergencies.
How Does BSNL Satellite-to-Device Work?
The service leverages Non-Terrestrial Network (NTN) connectivity through geostationary satellites located 36,000 kilometers above the Earth. Using this network, BSNL ensures seamless two-way communication. At the India Mobile Congress 2024, the company successfully demonstrated message transmission via L-band satellites, highlighting its technical capabilities. Unlike conventional cellular networks, users of this service will not depend on terrestrial infrastructure for connectivity.
When Will It Launch, and Who Can Access It?
Trials for the Direct-to-Device Satellite Connectivity began in October 2024, and the service is expected to launch in the coming months. However, BSNL has yet to disclose key details, such as:
- Eligibility: Who will be able to use the service?
- Pricing: Whether it will be included in existing recharge plans or require a separate subscription.
- Device Compatibility: Which devices will support this service?
These specifics are likely to be announced closer to the official rollout.
Why It’s a Game-Changer
BSNL’s Satellite-to-Device service marks a significant milestone in India’s telecom landscape. By bridging the connectivity gap in rural and remote areas, the service has the potential to revolutionize communication and emergency response in these regions. Additionally, it reinforces India’s position in adopting satellite-based communication technologies, setting the stage for broader advancements in the telecom sector.
As the nation waits for its full deployment, BSNL’s initiative promises to be a transformative solution for connecting the unconnected and enhancing the quality of life in India’s most isolated communities.
