Relying too heavily on Google Maps recently led to a risky situation for a man in Bengaluru. According to reports, the man was traveling from Guruvayankere to Nelliyadi when Google Maps suggested a detour to avoid a traffic jam on the traditional route. The suggested route, however, led him directly into a river!
Initially, the road seemed wide and reliable, giving him confidence in the new path. However, the road soon narrowed, eventually turning into a single lane, and eventually directed him toward a route crossing the Netravati River. Unfortunately, he soon realized that Google Maps’ alternative route was not meant for vehicular travel.
Caution When Using Google Maps
This incident serves as a reminder to use Google Maps with caution, especially in unfamiliar areas. Here are a few tips to avoid similar situations:
- Use Satellite View: Open Google Maps, select your destination, then tap on the “Layer” option in the top-right corner and choose “Satellite View.” This will give you a clearer picture of the route and surroundings.
- Zoom In: Zooming in allows you to better assess road conditions and determine if the path is suitable for your vehicle.
New Google Maps Feature: Air Quality Index (AQI)
In an effort to enhance user experience, Google Maps recently introduced a new feature in India: the Air Quality Index (AQI). This feature provides real-time air quality data, allowing users to check the air quality of their current or planned travel location directly within the app.
