Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), the state-owned telecom operator, has successfully deployed 5000 indigenous 4G sites across Kerala, marking a significant milestone in India’s push for self-reliant telecommunications infrastructure. The company has now installed over 65,000 4G sites nationwide using homegrown technology, further solidifying its position in the sector. With the lowest 4G tariffs in the world, BSNL is on track to achieve its ambitious goal of deploying 1 lakh 4G sites across India by June 2025.

BSNL’s 4G Expansion and Future Plans

While reaching the 1 lakh 4G sites target is a major achievement, BSNL’s long-term vision includes expanding network coverage and enhancing service reliability. Following the large-scale deployment of 4G, the telecom operator is also gearing up for the rollout of 5G technology, sourced from Indian companies. Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), one of BSNL’s key technology partners, is prepared to assist in upgrading BSNL’s 4G network to 5G capabilities.

The indigenous 4G technology deployed by BSNL has been designed to seamlessly transition to 5G with a simple software upgrade. The company has the flexibility to implement 5G Non-Standalone (NSA), similar to Airtel’s approach, while also actively exploring 5G Standalone (SA) solutions in collaboration with Indian technology firms. Although the formal tendering process is still underway, BSNL has earmarked New Delhi as the initial testing ground for its 5G SA network.

BSNL 4G Expansion Reaches More Regions

BSNL’s 4G network is rapidly expanding, bringing high-speed connectivity to underserved areas. The telco remains committed to keeping its tariffs affordable, even with the widespread launch of 4G services. As BSNL continues its rapid expansion, users across India can expect improved network access and connectivity powered entirely by indigenous technology.

With its continued investment in next-generation telecom infrastructure, BSNL is reinforcing India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India) initiative and paving the way for a robust, homegrown telecommunications ecosystem.
